Dewey and Finfgeld Scholarships

The Henry Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Committee is currently accepting applications for the Dewey and Finfgeld Scholarships.

Applications for these scholarships are attached. The applications must be completed and returned to Mrs. Self by Friday, April 14, 2023.

The $1,000 Dewey Scholarship is for a local student attending a four-year college or university. Renewable for up to $4,000 total if the student remains in good standing all four years of college.

The $1,500 Finfgeld Scholarship is for a local student attending a two-year community college: Illinois Valley Community College, Illinois Central College, or Blackhawk College. This scholarship is renewable for a total of $3,000 over the two years if the student remains in good standing.

Both the Dewey and the Finfgeld scholarships are endowed by their respective families.

Dr. Julie Hepton Nelson Scholarship - NEW 2023

This scholarship has been established in gratitude to the families of Henry-Senachwine School District and in recognition of the value of further education. Dr. Nelson was the Henry-Senachwine Grade and Junior High School Principal for eighteen years, from 2004 to 2022. As a lifelong educator, she believes that schools play a critical role in helping students deal with life’s challenges and that education has the potential to significantly improve a student’s whole life experience.

This scholarship for $1,000, paid to a designated institution of further learning or training, is available to graduating seniors who plan on pursuing a trade certification, skill-training, or an Associate’s degree.

Scholarship Application Requirements: Please submit

  • a record of your attendance
  • a record of grades to indicate consistent effort throughout all four years of high school
  • a brief description of your future plans and how further education/training will contribute to them
  • details of any specific need for scholarship funding

The application deadline is April 30, 2023 and Dr. Nelson will select each year’s successful recipient.

 

Steve Self Memorial Scholarship

The Steve Self Memorial Scholarship of $1000 has been established by the Self Family in honor of Steve Self.  During his career in the Henry-Senachwine School District from 2000-2020, Mr. Self taught physical education and coached baseball and basketball.  As a teacher and coach, he was highly invested in the students, school, and community.  He committed much of his time mentoring students and supporting the schools.  Through his commitment, Steve influenced and left a lasting impression on many people.  Coach Self’s investment in the students and school will continue through his memorial scholarship.  All seniors from Henry-Senachwine High School with post-secondary plans are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

To apply for the Steve Self Memorial Scholarship, students must submit an essay not to exceed two pages (double-spaced, typed, 12 pt font) to Mrs. Self by May 3. The essay needs to address 1] how you have used your time while at Henry-Senachwine High School and 2] how the opportunities and/or challenges you have faced in the community and at HSHS have shaped you and your future educational goals.

The student who is selected as the recipient of the Steve Self Memorial Scholarship will receive $1000 to use toward their post-secondary education plan any way they see fit.


Rhonda Downey Scholarship

Applicants should reside in Senachwine Township and be graduating at the end of the current school year. To apply please forward the following: a transcript from HSHS; a resume of participation in activities during your high school career; a short essay outlining your post-secondary education plans, your involvement in the community; a brief letter of recommendation from a teacher, advisor or employer. Applications should be sent to: Rhonda Downey Scholarship, c/o Senachwine Township, PO Box 7, Putnam, IL 61560.

Scholarship deadline is April 1 with presentation at HSHS at a date to be determined. The Scholarship is a one-time award to be presented annually in honor of Rhonda Downey who was Senachwine Township Clerk for 21 years and served our community in many ways through 4-H, FFA, Vacation Bible School and several municipal boards and committees
