How Counseling Works In the School Setting:
The goal of school counseling is to address minor issues which impact the student’s academic and/or functioning at school. If issues continue to impact the student after intervention of school counseling, a referral to an outside resource will be suggested to the parent/guardian.
Referrals can be made by either the parent/guardian, teacher, or administration. After 2-3 sessions, a Notification of Counseling Services form is sent home if long-term support may be needed.
Counseling in the school setting can take many forms, such as:
Individual Counseling: This counseling occurs on a one-to-one basis. This allows the student to share their feelings, resolve issues, and explore ideas in a smaller setting.
Group Counseling: Small groups may cover many topics, such as anger management strategies, friendship skills, and social skills, designed to best fit the groups’ needs.
ReThink:
ReThink Ed is an SEL designed to target the 5 CASEL Competencies: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Responsible Decision Making, Social Awareness, and Relationship Skills. Students in grades K-5 will utilize this program in the classroom. Students in grades 3-8 will participate in the ReThink SEL Screener. I will develop small groups based on screener results.
About the ROE Student Achievement Mentor Program:
The Student Achievement Mentor Program was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in a considerable increase of various struggles that students face in regard to the school setting. Following an evidence-based approach, mentors work with students on a bi-weekly basis to practice problem-solving strategies, develop social-emotional/academic skills, and regularly review progress in attendance, behavior, and course performance. Students are not removed from any supports that they may already be receiving, nor from what are considered Core Classes (math, history, science, English/ELA, social studies). If you are interested in the program for your student, please contact the school's mentor, Ms. Calderon (ccalderon@hscud35.org).
About Me:
Catie Calderon, the Student Achievement Mentor for the '25-'26 school year, brings almost 10 years of experience in working with children aged from birth to high school to the program. From the daycare rooms to the preschool classroom to now junior high, Ms. Calderon is eager to bring this program to the students of Henry-Senchawine. She comes from a big family, being 1 of 7 kids, and she refuses to let the chaos get to her. Ms. Calderon plans on raising a biggish family of her own, alongside her husband Will, dogs Oakley and Tootie, and cat Loaf, with their first baby due in December!
If you have any questions about the ROE Mentor Program, please contact Ms. Calderon (ccalderon@hscud35.org).
